1st November 2014
Do you enjoy riding motorcycles? Are you looking for something worthwhile to do this November 1st? Perhaps you’d be interested in the Snowy Ride!
The Snowy Ride is a motorcycle event designed to help raise support for childhood cancer research whilst having a fantastic day out riding. This fun-filled event attracts motorcycle riders from all over Australia who travel to the area for the chance to enjoy a quiet day away with friends and family whilst riding some of the best and most beautiful roads in the country.
Snowy Ride was launched in 2001 following a request from Steven Walter – a young man who sadly lost his tough battle against cancer. Steve was an immense motorcycle fan and loved to ride. He requested a motorcycle charity ride to be set up in order to raise funds for cancer research and care and a creative team set to work. The spectacular Snowy Ride event was the result. Since then, hundreds of bikers have participated each year, and millions of dollars have been raised to support this worthy cause.
The Snowy Ride is composed of various checkpoints located throughout the region including at Adaminaby, Dalgety, Berridale, Jindabyne, Cooma, Bombala, Charlotte Pass and finally in Thredbo. Registered riders and pillions will be entered automatically into the Honda Trade Promotion lottery. Minor Prizes will also be drawn for, so long as at least three checkpoints are reached. Riders may take any route through these checkpoints that they wish so long as they arrive at the final checkpoint in Thredbo by 4pm on Saturday.
There will also be a Mass Ride associated with the event, setting out from Bullocks Flat. Should you wish to participate in that, you must arrive there no later than 3:45pm. Hundreds of bikers will be participating in the 16km ride to Thredbo, and there will be no charge for participating in this portion of the event. It’s a great way to get out with fellow riders and show support through numbers.
While supporting a worthy cause is always enough of a reward in itself, Honda will be adding their own incentives to the mix in the form of prizes. Last year, they gave two bikes as prizes, with a combined value totaling around $25,000. While this years prizes have not yet been announced, Honda certainly will not disappoint.
If that’s not enough, be sure to check out other events in the area, such as the National Busker Championships, in Cooma!
Of course, while the Snowy Ride is a great cause, riding the event will most certainly be a tiring affair. After the day’s excitement, retire to your Snowy Mountain accommodation at Pender Lea Chalets, just a short ride away.
